Max Schmeling vs. Joe Louis in 1936

Item # 663708

June 20, 1936

SPORTING GREEN section only of the San Francisco Chronicle, June 20, 1936

* Max Schmeling (German boxer)
* Joe Louis (Brown Bomber)
* Heavyweight boxing match UPSET (1st report)

The front page of this section has a great banner headline above the masthead: "SCHMELING BATTERS JOE LOUIS TO CANVAS; KNOCKS OUT 'UNBEATABLE' NEGRO IN TWELFTH" with subheads and two nice photos, one showing the referee counting out a defeated Joe Louis laying on the canvas. (see) Nice for display. Much more on the next two pages with banner headlines and a few more photos. Probably one of the best issues we seen on this famous boxing upset.
Complete sport's section only with 14 pages, light toning and minor wear at the margins, small binding holes along the spine, generally very nice.
