THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, November, 1786

* Botany Bay
* New South Wales
* Australia

The first 2 1/2 pages are taken up with a lengthy & detailed report on the establishment of a penal colony in Botany Bay. It begins: "While the plan for settling a colony at Botany Bay is preparing to be carried into execution..." with much more, & including a description of the country as well as the natives (Aborigines) of the area. A wealth of terrific & very early content on Australia.
Also included is content concerning a medal of Queen Elizabeth including a plate of it. Near the back under: "America" is a report on the Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts.
The plate noted above has many images & is a foldout.
Complete in 92 pages, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. Measures 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, very nice condition.

A very nice magazine from the "mother country" not long after the end of the Revolutionary War with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
