April 15, 1865

NEW YORK COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER, April 15, 1865

* Abraham Lincoln assassination
* Ford's Theater - John Wilkes Booth

The top of the middle column of the front page has the tragic headlines: "GREAT NATIONAL CALAMITY" "Assassination of the President" "HIS DEATH" "The Secretary of State Stabbed in His Bed" "His Son Bludgeoned" "Escape of the Murderers" "The Official Despatches".
Then more column heads on the ftpg: "PARTICULARS OF THE ASSASSINATION" " "How The Murderer Was Identified" "J. Wilkes Booth The Assassin" ""Attempt on Mr. Stanton's Life" "The Attack on Mr. Seward".
Even more coverage inside, including a nice editorial headed: "The President's Death" and an erroneous report: "Death of F. W. Seward" (he would live till 1915); "The Assassination of the President" "A Universal Feeling of Gloom Pervading the City" and even more. Also: "Inauguration of Vice President Johnson as President of the United States."
Although a great wealth of content on the assassination, this issue is in "2nd rate" condition at best. There are many archival repairs inside, with some text loss to the initial report and also a bit of loss in the back leaf (see photos). Large folio size, ragged at the margins, scattered foxing. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half as the paper measures 24 by 31 inches. Still a great price for an April 15 newspaper.
