April 03, 1865

THE NEW YORK HERALD, April 3, 1865

* Battle of Five Forks - Last important fight of Civil War
* Petersburg VA Virginia - Day Richmond would fall
* Last week prior to Robert E. Lee's surrender

This was the day the Confederate capital of Richmond was taken by the Yankees. See the photos for the great front page, featuring a large Civil War map headed: "THE DECISIVE BATTLE OF THE REBELLION" with a subhead, the map showing the Petersburg vicinity.
Almost the entire first column is taken up with nice war-related head including a engraving of a heraldic eagle. The heads include: "VICTORY" "The Battle on Friday" "Important Despatches from Gen. Grant, the President & Secretary Stanton" "Triumphant Success of Our Arms After Three Days Hard Fighting" "Lee Driven Into His Last Line of Works" "Petersburg Virtually Ours" and so much more.
There are also two graphics on pg. 5, one a map headed: "Scene of the Expected Naval Fight" and the other an engraving of the "Rebel Iron Ram Stonewall". Much war reporting on the inside & back pages as well.
Eight pages, minor loss at the ftpg. top margin not affecting any type, nice condition.
