April 04, 1865

EVENING WHIG, Richmond, Virginia, April 4, 1865  A terrific issue, being what we believe to be just the second issue published under Yankee control since the fall of the Confederate capital. Although not printed on the issue sources note this is vol. 1, no. 2 under Yankee control, with April 4 being the first. I can find no record of an April 5 issue being published & Gregory does not show any institutions holding an April 5 issue, so I believe this to be the case.
The ftpg. has just a one column masthead & dateline with most of the page taken up with: "The Evacuation--The Conflagration--The Surrender--Scenes". Among the subheads: "Scenes in the City During Monday Night" "The City Fired" "Flight of the Confederates" "The Mayor Surrenders the City" and more.
Page 2 has column heads including: "Lee's Disastrous Retreat" "Gen. Grant Pressing On" "Gen. Sheridan at Work" "Capture of More Prisoners" "The Rebel Army Demoralized" "Capture of the Enemy's Works" "THE FALL OF RICHMOND" "Enthusiastic Rejoicing at the North" "A Furor of Excitement" with more.
Related articles on the fall of Richmond take much of pages 2 and 3. The back page is mostly taken up with ads and notices, as well as a print of the: "Star Spangled Banner".
Terrific to have a Richmond newspaper with detailed accounts of the fall of Richmond. This is the first of this date we have offered.
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, close-trimmed at the right margins of pages 2, 3 & 4 causes loss of some letters but not affecting the noted reports. Otherwise quite nice condition.
