June 25, 1683

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, June 25, 1683

* Charles II of England
* Assassination plot

More than half of the front page is taken up with a preface and document concerning the Rye House Plot, which was a plan to assassinate King Charles II and his brother James (heir to the throne). It ultimately would not come to fruition (see hyperlink for details). The preface references the formal Proclamation & mentions the men involved in the plot, followed by the actual Proclamation seeking the capture of them, with a reward (see). One bit mentions: "...have traitorously conspired together, & with divers other ill-affected & desperate persons of our Kingdom, to compose the death and destruction of our royal Person and of our dearest brother James Duke of York...". Immediately following is a note that one of them, Col. John Rumsey, had been captured.
This Proclamation was just issued by the King on June 23 so a very timely report. The actual plot was not uncovered until June 12.
A single sheet newspaper, a small hole at the left margin touches one letter in the Proclamation, minor loss at the top margin, light foxing, generally good.
