A Proclamation and an Address signed by Jefferson Davis...

Item # 661714

August 17, 1863

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Aug. 17, 1863  Most of the last column is taken up with two documents, the first a: "Proclamation By the President" which includes: "...Let us rather receive in humble thankfulness the lesson which He has taught in our recent reverses, devoutly acknowledging that to Him & not to our own feeble arms, are due the honor & the glory of victory..." calling for a day of fasting, humiliation & prayer, signed in type: Jefferson Davis.
The other item is a lengthy: "Address of The President To the Soldiers of the Confederate States" in which he attempts to rally the troops. The photos show the full text, but a portion includes: "....what they mean by success, their malignant rage aims at nothing less than the extermination of yourselves, your wives, and children. They seek to destroy what they cannot plunder...Fellow citizens, no alternative is left you but victory, or subjugation, slavery and the utter ruin of yourselves, your families & your country. The victory is within your reach. You need but stretch forth your hands to grasp it..." with much more. This Address is signed in type: Jefferson Davis.
Among other items on the front page are: "Military Promotions" "The Military Situation" "City Intelligence" "The Courts" "The Double Quick" & other smaller items.
The back page has much on the Civil War including the always interesting editorial, plus items headed: "The Late Raid Towards Weldon" "News of the Mississippi" "General Pemberton & the Administration" "The Yankees In Huntsville, Alabama" "Negroes Taken in Army" "Notes of the War" & other smaller items.
