March 20, 1942

NEW YORK WORLD-TELEGRAM, March 20, 1942

* General Douglas MacArthur
* "I Shall Return" quote as 1st reported
* World War II Philippines

The front page has a nice banner headline: "PRESIDENT ORDERS DRIVE ON JAPS, MacARTHUR SAYS" with subheads that include: ""'I Came Through from Corregidor and I Shall Return,' General Says" and more. Nice for display.
The report is from an interview with General Douglas MacArthur, supreme Allied commander in the Southwest Pacific. Text includes: "...The President of the United States ordered me to break thru the Japanese lines & to proceed from Corregidor to Australia for the purpose...of organizing the American offensive against Japan. The primary purpose of this is the relief of the Philippines. I came thru and I shall return." with more. And he did. This is one of the more famous utterances of the World War II era and all on the front page here. Very rare as such.
Note: History notes that March 20 was the date of his famous quote.
Complete with all 38 pages, light toning at the margins, small library stamp within the masthead, small binding holes along the spine, generally nice.
