July 29, 1955

THE RUSSELL DAILY NEWS, Kansas, July 29, 1955

* Space Race begins
* U.S. vs. Soviet Union

The front page has reporting on which essentially announced the creation of the "space race" between the United States and the Soviet Union with three column heading: "Satellites Which Circle Earth Are Due in '57" In reality the Soviets would take the lead in the space race with the successful launch of Sputnik 1 in October, 1957. The American would respond 4 months later with a spectacular failure, to be followed-up by its first space success in early 1958. The announcement in newspapers is part of the Wikipedia report on the space race (see). This is a very notable event, essentially announcing the start of the now-famous space race & as such a cornerstone issue for any space collection.
Complete with all 6 pages, a few small binding holes along the spine, otherwise nice.
