THE AMERICAN JOURNAL & GENERAL ADVERTISER, Providence, Rhode Island, Aug. 19, 1779 A truly rare title from the Revolutionary War, as it lasted for less than 1 1/2 years from March, 1779 to August, 1781.
The entire front page has content dealing with the increasing prices of commodities & the depreciation of the currency in the colonies, a notable concern at the time. Over half of page 2 deals with this as well.
Page 2 has a report noting: "...we are informed that a cartel for an exchange of prisoners was established between Dr. Franklin, our minister at the court of France, and the British ministry..." with more.
Page 3 mentions that the: "...King of Prussia...is now an advocate for universal peace & has entered conjointly with Spain into the mediation of the disputes between Great Britain, France and America."
This is followed by a: "Return of Ordinance and stores taken at Stoney-Point, July 15, 1779 at Night." which was a notable victory for the Americans. Also a report from New York: "The enemy have lately contracted their lines & are fortifying Governor's Island and the Narrows..." then: "We have accounts that the enemy are fortifying the Narrows near Sandy Hook. They have drawn their main army over Kingsbridge to Seven Mile Stone. Headquarters of the American grand army is at West Point...".
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, with wide margins, some mouse-chewing to an upper corner barely touches one words in a pg. 3 ad, otherwise good condition.
