NEW YORK HERALD, April 13, 1861

* The American Civil War begins (1st report)
* For Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina attacked

The very beginning of the Civil War remains a cornerstone issue for any war collection, and this famous issue of the Herald is one of the best we have had the pleasure to offer.
The front page features a very nice map headed: "THE SCENE OF OPERATIONS" with subhead: "Charleston and Its Defences--Plan of the Harbor, Showing the position of Forts Sumter and Moultrie, Cummings Point Iron Battery, Fort Johnson, the Floating Battery and Other Fortifications."
Over half of the first column on the front page is taken up with historic headlines on the beginning of the Civil War including:
"THE WAR BEGUN" "Very Exciting News from Charleston" "The Summons to Major Anderson to Surrender" "Major Anderson's Refusal" "Bombardment of Fort Sumter Commenced" and so much more (see).
Additionally, and adding more graphic appeal to this attractive newspaper, the last 2 columns have 3 engravings showing: "Cumming's Point Iron Battery" "The Interior of Fort Johnson--Gun Battery" and "Fort Johnson--Mortar Battery".
Virtually the entire front page is taken up with news concerning the opening of the war and includes six dispatches signed in type by: P.G.T. Beauregard.
Complete in 8 pages, nice condition.
