GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, January, 1787 Included is the notable: "Act for Establishing Religious Freedom, Passed in the Assembly of Virginia, in the beginning of the year 1786" which takes over a full page. The statute disestablished the Church of England in Virginia and guaranteed freedom of religion to people of all religious faiths, including Catholics and Jews as well as members of all Protestant denominations. This text is worded a bit differently from the final rendition but it is true to the intent.
Near the back is over half a page of: "American News"
Present is one of the two plates called for.
Complete in 96 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 inches, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, very nice condition.
A very nice magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
