September 07, 1831

HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE, Northampton, Massachusetts, Sept. 7, 1831  Pages 2 and 3 have an uncommonly lengthy account of Nat Turner's slave rebellion, a slave rebellion that took place in Southampton County, Virginia led by Nat Turner. Rebel slaves killed from 55 to 65 people, at least 51 being white. The rebellion was put down within a few days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months.
This account on page 2 is headed: "Negro Insurrection At An End" and begins with a summation of the event: "...that a number of negroes, chiefly runaways, combined on Sunday for the purpose of plunder...plundered several houses & committed some murders before their career could be checked..." with more of what happened.
Then a letter with other accounts of the insurrection including in part: "...nearly 30 negroes have been killed...We suppose them entirely suppressed, if they are not all killed and taken...The dead bodies of white and black lay just as they were slain, unburied..." followed by a: "List of white persons ascertained to be killed."
There are then several more reports--with additional detail, some gruesome--all taking over 1 1/2 columns of text.
One of the lengthier accounts of perhaps the most notable slave insurrection of the 19th century.
Additionally, the front page has nearly 3 columns headed: "The Slave Trade" and page 3 has an interesting article: "The Sea Serpent--Once More!"
Four pages, some light damp staining and light foxing, good condition.
