March 22, 1862

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, March 22, 1862

* Battle of Hampton Roads, Virginia
* Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (CSS Virginia)
* Civil War ironclads clash

The front page is dominated by a very nice print: "The Ericsson Steam Battery 'Monitor' " with the balance of the ftpg. taken up with a detailed article on it, headed; "The Steam Battery 'Monitor' ". This carries over a bit to page 2, where also are found several other articles on the Civil War.
Perhaps the best item is the page 5 article: "The Fight Between the 'Merrimac' And ' Monitor' " which takes over a full column with much detail. This was perhaps the most significant naval battle of the Civil War, ground-breaking for the use of iron-clad boats for the first time.
Also of note is the nice back page print of: "The Iron-Plated Rebel Steamer 'Merrimac' " with a related, technical article on it.
Terrific to have not only prints of these two notable steamers in a scientific journal--where they belong--but also a nice account of their historic battle as well.
Complete in 16 pages, minimal margin wear, nice condition.
