October 10, 1871

NEW YORK HERALD, October 10, 1871

* The Great Chicago Fire of 1871
* Nice, early reporting w/ map

Page 5 has a quite rare banner headline announcing: "FIRE AND DEATH IN CHICAGO." "The Most Disastrous Conflagration That Ever Occurred in America---Over One third of the City in Ruins---Map of the Destroyed City."
The prime feature is the fully half page map showing the area of destruction with the balance of the page taken up with news reports on the fire, carrying over to take all of page 6 and near all of page 9.
Page 6 has various column headlines on the fire, and most of the first column of page 9 is taken up wit some terrific heads. The last head notes: "As We Go to Press the Fire is Still Raging and Fears that the Whole City Will Fall."
Sixteen pages, browning and some margin chipping to the first 2 leaves, otherwise rather nice.
