February 06, 1819

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Feb. 6, 1819  Certainly the most significant content in this issue is a complete printing of the Convention of 1818, headed on page 2 as: "BRITISH TREATY. By the President of the United States of America, A PROCLAMATION". This treaty with England was respecting fisheries, boundary, and the restoration of slaves between the United States of America and the United Kingdom. It resolved standing boundary issues between the two nations at the Canadian border, and allowed for joint occupation and settlement of the Oregon Country. The treaty marked the last permanent major territorial loss of continental United States, the northern most tip of the territory of Louisiana above the 49th parallel north, known as the Milk River in present day southern Alberta.
The document is printed here in full taking 1 1/2 pages with all six articles and signed in type by Albert Gallatin & others, also by the President: James Monroe, and the Secretary of State: John Quincy Adams (see).
Sixteen pages, 6 x 9 1/2 inches, in nice clean condition.

This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
