December 18, 1819

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Dec. 18, 1819  Somewhat inconspicuously noted within a report from Congress, with a dateline of December 14, is: "It being announced that the president had signed the resolution for the admission of Alabama into the union, Mr. Walker took his seat as a senator from that state." Thus, with relatively little congressional ceremony, Alabama became the 22nd state of the United States of America. Nice to have this report in a newspaper from so close to the nation's Capital, and which was essentially the mouthpiece of Congressional proceedings.
This issue also has much on: "Relations With Spain" which includes the historic Adams-Onis Treaty in which Spain ceded to East Florida to the United States & renounces any claims to West Florida which was already annexed by the United States. The U.S. renounces items claims to Texas. It includes several documents signed by James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. This text takes nearly 12 pages.
Twenty-four page issue, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, very nice condition.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
