December 25, 1839

NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., Dec. 25, 1839

* President Martin Van Buren
* State of the Union Address

The entire page 2 and nearly one-third of page 3 are taken up with the President's annual state-of-the-union address, headed: "MESSAGE of the President Of the United States Transmitted to Both Houses of Congress, Dec. 24, 1839".
As was typical with such addresses the President touches upon the happenings of the year. It is signed by him at the conclusion: M. Van Buren
Terrific to have this report in a Washington newspaper, where the address was given.
The top of page 3 has an editorial on it headed: "The Message".
Also of curious interest--and perhaps not surprising in this Christmas Day issue--is a printing of: "A Visit From St. Nicholas, by Clement C. Moore" perhaps the most enduring Christmas poem of all time. It was written in 1823 but it was not until 1837 that the poem was attributed in print to Moore, making this an early attribution.
Four pages, light damp stains at the top, nice condition.
