THE NEW YORK TIMES, October 14, 1930

* Jack 'Legs' Diamond shot 5 times
* New York City Gangster
* Best title to be had ?

The top of the front page has a one column heading: "DIAMOND WAS SHOT BY HIS OWN GANG, MULROONEY SAYS" with subheads. (see) Lengthy text continues inside. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day throughout. Complete in 52 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Very nice condition.

source: wikipedia: Jack "Legs" Diamond (1897-December 18, 1931), aka Gentleman Jack, was a famous Irish-American gangster in New York City during the Prohibition era. A bootlegger and close associate of gambler Arnold Rothstein, Diamond survived a number of attempts on his life between 1919 and 1931, causing him to be known as the "clay pigeon of the underworld." In 1930, Diamond's nemesis Dutch Schultz remarked to his own gang, "Ain't there nobody that can shoot this guy so he don't bounce back?" Jack Diamond was not related to Lucchese crime family soldier, Stanley Diamond.
