September 16, 1850

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., September 16, 1850

* Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
* Passes the United States Senate
* Southern slave holders & Northern Free-Soilers
* Best title to be had from our nation's capital (rare)

Being the mouthpiece of the federal government it was typical that reports & documents emanating from Congress would appear in print first in this newspaper. Collectors always desire to have notable governmental reports in  newspapers from the nation's capital.
Not surprisingly most of this four page issue is taken up with verbatim debates in the Senate. The back page has a brief yet noteworthy report headed: "The Fugitive Slave Bill" with the text noting: "The enrolled bill entitled 'An Act respecting fugitives from justice and persons escaping from the service of their masters,' was signed by the Presiding officer of the Senate."
This was the formal report that Fugitive Slave Bill passed the Senate. It would receive the President's signature two days later on September 18 and become the law of the land.
Also of interest is a small bkpg. item: "The Slave Trade in the District of Columbia" with a much lengthier ftpg. report from the Senate: "Slave Trade in the District of Columbia."
A notable report to have in this venerable Washington, D.C. newspaper.
Complete in four pages, very nice, clean condition.
