NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, July 22, 1826

* John Adams & Thomas Jefferson deaths

Inside contains a lengthy article headed: "Adams and Jefferson" which includes near the beginning: "Fellow citizens--I regret to be obliged...to trespass further on your patience. The lot has fallen on me to call your attention...to the pecuniary embarrassments of our distinguished fellow-citizen, Thomas Jefferson..." and much, much more. This is dated July 4, the day he (and John Adams died) but which was not known at the time. This article deals with ways to assist Jefferson in his debt-ridden situation late in life. Further on notes: "...If I am asked why Jefferson is singled out amid his compatriots--my answer is, he stands per-eminent alike for his services and his misfortunes...".
Other more timely articles in this issue notes the death of both Jefferson & Adams, including: "Testimonies of Respect for the Deceased Patriarchs" and "Adams and Jefferson--Jefferson and Adams!" as well as the letter from Jefferson's grandson dated: "Monticello, July 4, 1826" beginning: "I have withheld my letter to announce, not as I had vainly hoped, my beloved grandfather's restoration, but, alas! his death. He expired this day..." with more.
More in this issue on the death of Jefferson as well.
