What could be better than a Chicago newspaper reporting on the Great Chicago Fire of 1871? A terrific issue, single sheet almost certainly due to the lack of newsprint from the fire, published just 3 days after the fire which almost obliterated Chicago. The top of the front page has; "OUR CALAMITY! " "Additional Facts & Incidents--The General Situation" "Contributions for Relief from All Over the Country" "Statements of Losses" "The Dead and Missing". Also: "PROCLAMATION" "The Mayor Gives the Superintendence of the City into the Hands of Lt. General Sheridan" "The Need of the Hour" "Sympathy & Help" and more. Not surprisingly almost the entire front page is taken up with fire-related reports. On item: "Interesting To Thieves" warns that: "...Any person stealing...they shall kill the persons, by my orders. No mercy shall be shown them but death shall be their fate." signed: Allan Pinkerton.
Close to half of the back page has news items, mostly taken up with fire-related content. News as well.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, folio size, various tears at margins with some old mends, some fold wear & foxing.
