THOMAS'S MASSACHUSETTS SPY OR WORCESTER GAZETTE, Aug. 8, 1798 A very ornate masthead (see). The entire front page & half of pg. 2 are taken up with: "An Act to provide for the Valuation of Lands & dwelling houses & the Enumeration of Slaves within the United States" which is signed in type by the President: John Adams. Pg. 2 also has a: "Speech" by Napoleon Buonaparte upon his arrival at Toulon, France.
Page 3 has a report from New York beginning: "The President of the United States arrived here last evening & was welcomed to our metropolis with every mark of enthusiastic respect, veneration & esteem...". Also a report of his arrival in Newark, with his wife, on his way home to Braintree, and his expectation at Worcester, Mass. And a note that: "We have accounts...that capt. Truxton, in the Constellation frigate, has captured a French privateer...".
The back page has a Mass. Act for : "...more Effectually to prevent the Pernicious practice of Gaming", or gambling.
Four pages, tiny rubbing hole at a fold, good condition.
