May 15, 1776

THE CONNECTICUT JOURNAL, New Haven, May 15, 1776

* American Revolutionary War
* Great year to have (1776)

This is certainly one of the less common titles from the Revolutionary War, and nice to have an issue dated within 7 weeks of the Declaration of Independence.  The front page has a wide variety of news reports including some items on the Revolutionary War. Bits include: "...account that on the 31st of Dec. the provincials attempted to take Quebec by storm but were defeated...". There is a report which makes mention of Colonel Ethan Allen. Another report from North Carolina includes: "...as I came through Virginia I found the inhabitants desirous to be independent from Britain, however they were willing to submit their opinion on the subject to whatever the General Congress should determine..." and much more (see photos for portions).
The news continues over to pages 2, 3 and 4 with various war-related items mixed in as well (photos show portions), with the back page having a full column taken up with an: "Extract of a Letter from a Gentleman in Boston to his Friend in Providence dated March 23, 1776". Ads are found on pgs. 3 & 4 as well.
Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, wear along folds causing some small holes but causes little loss of readability. Some small tears at folds & margins as well, and the top half of the ftpg. has some dirtiness, a discrete archival mend. A rare Revolutionary War title from this very desirable year.
