April 15, 1859
NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., April 15, 1858 The top of the back page has an interesting article headed: "Rehoboth Beach" which takes 7 column inches. Near the beginning is: "About five miles below Cape Henlopen, on the Delaware sea-coast, is a spot of land now laid off as a town called Rehoboth. The fast land extends down to the beach, which is of hard sand, furnishing, when the tide is down, a magnificent drive for miles. The surf is excellent and safe for bathers..." with much more descriptive text of this now-famous beach community.
Interesting that on-line research notes the town was founded around 1872. This report pre-dates that by 14 years.
Complete as a four page newspaper, very nice condition. The folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.
