America prohibits the importation of slaves...



Item # 654167 THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, England, March, 1807  Under: "Abstract of Foreign Occurrences" is a brief yet notable report: "The American Congress has passed a bill for the abolition of the slave trade, by a majority of 24---the numbers being ayes 73, noes 49." This refers to the significant "Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves" which was signed into law on March 2, 1807, to become effective January 1, 1808.
Also of Judaica interest is: "Abstract of an Exhortation Delivered by the Rev. Solomon Hirschel, at the Great Synagogue, Duke's Place...Printed handsome in Hebrew & English and Circulated among the Jews."  And under "Review of New Publications" is over a page taken up with: "The Stranger in American: Containing Observations...on the Genius, Manners & Customers of the People of the United States...and the Slave Trade" (see for portions).
Both full pages plates called for are present.
Complete in 96 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, very nice condition.
