December 19, 1865

NEW YORK TIMES, Dec. 19, 1865  The top of the front page the historic headlines announcing the adoption of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. They include: "THE CONSUMMATION!" "Slavery Forever Dead in the United States" "Official Proclamation of the Great Fact" "Twenty-seven States Declared for Universal Freedom" "No Human Bondage After Dec. 19, 1865" and a bit more. Included is the full text of the document announcing that the 13th Amendment was ratified by twenty-seven states. Ratification by the 27th state meant that "...three-fourths of the whole number of states..." approved the Amendment, thus becoming part of the Constitution. Within the document is the historical text: "...Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction..." The document is signed in type: Wm. H. Seward.
An historic report and great to have on the front page of this famous newspaper.
Eight pages, an archival mend at the spine with some blank spine loss, an archival mend at the central fold causing partial loss to two lines of the Proclamation (see photos), otherwise nice condition.
