April 12, 1861

NEW YORK HERALD, April 12, 1861  A nice issue on the beginning of the Civil War, with the first column headlines acknowledging the culmination of  tensions in Fort Sumter. They include: "THE IMPENDING WAR" "Highly Important News from Charleston" "Fort Sumter Summoned to Surrender" "Refusal of Major Anderson to Comply" and much more (see). Indeed, the fighting at Fort Sumter would begin this very day. Also on the front page are four engravings headed: "Cumming's Point Iron Battery" "The Interior of Fort Johnson--Our Battery" "Fort Johnson--Mortar Battery" and "The Confederate States Revenue Flag".
Almost the entire front page is taken up with text concerning the imminent outbreak of war at Fort Sumter.
Eight pages, very nice condition.
