THE NEW YORK TIMES, June 12, 1868 Page 5 has a brief "SOUTHERN OPINION" of the 1st official Memorial Day, which includes in part: "Today thousands of Southerners maids and matrons in this city [Petersburg] will throng about the spots hallowed by the dust of Southern chivalry, bearing their tender offerings of violets and roses... The sweet perfume of their noble sacrifice shall forever be a joy...,' with more.
Page 5 also has under the heading, "INDIANA - Gen. Grant and the Jews...," a report which tells of considerable pressure being put upon the Jews throughout the country to not vote for Grant - the reason being affixed to his well-known General Order No. 11 (Vicksburg).
Complete in eight pages, slight dampstaining with an archival mend in the margin of the back page, in overall very nice condition. See images for details.
