April 24, 1863

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, April 24, 1863  The front page, under the heading, "Award of Medals of Honor to Seamen," includes as one of the listed recipients, James Buck, who would eventually have three naval vessels named after him). Also on the front page is, "The Maltreatment of Contraband (see last two images)," which tells of the bad treatment of captured slaves, and includes a recommendation to be watched over by colored guards as opposed to whit soldiers. While the term "slave pen" is commonly considered southern vernacular, the term is used in this article in regards to the "contraband." See images for details.
Among the additional front page column heads on the Civil War are: "The War in the South-West," "The Rebel Battery at Warrenton Destroyed," "Rebels Near Pilot Knob, Mo.," "The Army Nearly All Paid," "The Case of Gen. Buell,"  (see last two images) and more.
