Oscar Strauss... First Jew selected for Presidential Cabinet...

Item # 652983

October 24, 1906

WELLSVILLE DAILY REPORTER, New York, October 24, 1906  The front page has the 2-line, 2-column heading: "SEVERAL CHANGES IN THE CABINET," followed by the mention of Oscar Strauss - who was the first Jew (excluding Judah Benjamin who served in the Cabinet of the Confederacy). The coverage includes, in part: "The appointment of Mr. Strauss caused considerable surprise, as it will be the first case where a citizen of the Hebrew faith has been made a member of the President's Cabinet," with more to follow.
Other news of the day is present throughout.
The issue is complete in 8 pages, and although it is evenly toned, has a slightly rough spine, and is brittle, most issues from this "pulpish" period do not survive - this issue certainly being in better than average condition for the era. It must be handled with care.
