THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY, New York, May & June, 1864 This two-issue set contains multi-page accounts of both a visit to Yosemite (now Yosemite National Park) and St. Helena Island and other small islands off the South Carolina coast.among the first victories of the north which provided for the earliest emancipation of American slaves.
Concerning battles which provided for the early emancipation of slaves, It is interesting to note that the account is told by Charlotte Forten, a free African American woman from a prominent family from Philadelphia who joined the effort to help teach the former slaves how to be self-sufficient. This two issue set provides the first printing of her detailed account. See images for full details of both accounts.
