Page 6 has under the title, "Reception of Mrs. Stowe in England," details concerning her trip to England - which includes the address made in her honor, and the response given by her husband on her behalf. Included is an intriguing editorial comment, which includes in part: "Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the fair authoress of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' has touched the fair soil of England - a soil sacred to freedom and on which the slave has never rested his feet without leaving his manacles behind. We have national foibles enough and to spare; national ignorance of the most blighting and debasing kind; but, thank Heaven, neither at home nor abroad do we hold any goods or chattels in human bones and sinews." The article continues, "It was natural, therefore, that the book to which Mrs. Stowe owes her celebrity should be devoured greedily in a land which has a deep and abiding detestation of slavery," with considerably more to follow.
