THE NATIONAL ERA, Washington, D.C., February 24, 1853

* Harriet Beecher Stowe

This newspaper is forever linked to the best-selling novel of the 19th century: "Uncle Tom's Cabin", for the book was originally released as a 40 week serial in this anti-slavery newspaper beginning in June, 1851. It was the newspaper's publisher who encouraged Stowe to produce the work in book form, and it is common consensus that the book had much to do with popularizing sentiment which lead to the Civil War.
The back page has an ad for the book headed: "Mrs. H.B. Stowe's New Work - A Key To Uncle Tom's Cabin..." with more (see images). Also included on the same page, under "EXTRACTS FROM OUR CORRESPONDENCE," are a host of letters providing contemporary reactions to her initial work. Great to have these in the paper renowned for printing the original in serial form. See images for details.
Four pages, nice condition. Although this issue is tagged to receive a supersized 26x20" folder, since the issue has already been folded at the midfold, keeping the issue folded in a 24x18" folder may be a better option.
