November 06, 1863

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., November 6, 1863

* John Wilkes Booth as an actor
* Rare appearance at Ford's Theatre

A terrific issue with one of the more ironic twists of history, and only to be found in a newspaper from Washington, D.C.
While page 2 has various reports on the Civil War, of interest to the collector is the advertisement on page 3, headed: "FORD'S NEW THEATRE" which includes within the text: "Friday Evening, November 6, 1863, Benefit of J. Wilkes Booth..." and then a bit further on: "The performance will commence with The Merchant of Venice. Shylock......J. Wilkes Booth.  To Conclude with Taming The Shrew. Petruchio........J. Wilkes Booth." with more detail (see).
As an added treat, the top of the front page has a great item acknowledging the talents of Booth, headed: "Ford's New Theatre---Benefit Of Booth" noting in part: "This evening, for the benefit of Mr. Booth, two splendid Shakespearean plays are announced with an admirable cast of characters..." and further on: "...Mr. Booth appears as Shylock in the former and as Petruchio in the latter. Mr. Ford's star combination company will appear in both pieces. We may predict for this gifted young actor a liberal response to the genius which prompts him to emulate the talents of his gifted sire." the latter comment acknowledging his famous father, Junius Brutus Booth.
Booth appeared on the stage at Ford's Theatre for two weeks from Nov. 2-15, 1863 (Abraham Lincoln attended the November 9 performance!) and would only appear one more time at Ford's Theatre, that being a single performance on March 18, 1865, less than a month before the fateful event of April 14, 1865.
Four pages, folio size, very nice condition.
