The front page has two letters signed in type by the President: A. Lincoln, both to the governor of New York, Horatio Seymour. Inside has: "Who 'Hurrah's for Jeff. Davis!' "Negro Equality" "Jackson, Mississippi. As It Was, And As It Is" "The Conscription Act" "Jeff Davis' Library" "Barbarities of Negro Soldiers" "The Wane of the Rebellion" and much more.
Perhaps the best content is a "Proclamation of Jefferson Davis" to the soldiers of the Confederacy, signed in type: Jefferson Davis. This Proclamation is a rousing attempt to rally the troops. The photos show the full text, but a portion includes: "....what they mean by success. Their malignant rage aims at nothing less than the extermination of yourselves, your wives, and children. They seek to destroy what they cannot plunder...Fellow citizens, no alternative is left you but victory, or subjugation, slavery and the utter ruin of yourselves, your families & your country. The victory is within your reach. You need but stretch forth your hands to grasp it..." with much more.
Eight pages, very nice condition.
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
