* Jefferson nickel design is created
The common nickel, found in every day change, was altered dramatically in 1938 when the previous "Indian head" or "buffalo nickel" was replaced by the Jefferson nickel. In a design contest, Felix Schlag's entry won over 389 other entries.
But note that the reverse, showing Monticello, is not the design ultimately used (see). The winning design shows a side view while the design used is a full front view.
The top of page 6 has photos of both the front and back, headed: "Winning Design Picked For the Jefferson Nickel" with a bit of text beneath the photos (see).
Complete in 40 pages, this is the "rag edition" created specifically for institutional use and using very high quality newsprint. Excellent condition.
