November 21, 1863

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., November 21, 1863

* President Abraham Lincoln
* Gettysburg Address at battlefield cemetery
* From the nation's capital (rare as such)

One of the better Gettysburg Address issues we have offered as it is printed in this famous newspaper from the nation's capital.
This historic report of the dedication of the national cemetery begins by detailing some of the particulars of the afternoon, headed: "The Ceremonies At Gettysburg" "Consecration of the Cemetery" with some text including: "...the towbn was crowded...The special train conveying the President...reached there about half past six o'clock in the evening. The President was greeted at the depot with much enthusiasm..." and the report includes Lincoln's little speech to the crowd (see). Much more on the ceremonies with mention of Mr. Everett's speech (not printed here), then a subhead: "Speech of the President" introduced with: "The President then appeared at the foot of the platform, and, upon being introduced by the Marshal, was vociferously cheered by the vast audience. He spoke as follows:".
And what follows is the full text of one of the most famous speeches of the 19th century, beginning: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation...". At the end is: "Long-continued applause." with a bit on the closing events (see).
Of curious interest is a front page notice headed: "Ford's New Theatre" which would be so tragically tied to Lincoln in less than 18 months, and which--logically--would only be found in a Washington newspaper..
Complete in four pages, never bound nor trimmed, large folio size measuring 21 1/4 by 29 1/2 inches, good condition.
