September 29, 1862

THE NEW YORK HERALD, September 29, 1862

* General David Hunter
* re. emancipation Proclamation
* President Abraham Lincoln

Although there is nice Civil War coverage on the front page, the best content is on page 4 where is found: "The Proclamation", "The Emancipation Manifesto of Gen. Hunter and the Counter Blast of the President", "Mr. Lincoln's Three Months' Notice to the Rebels", "The Border State and New England Abolition View of the Proclamation" and "Beecher On the Proclamation". This was concerning the General Hunter emancipation controversy, as he declared slaves within his territory of the South free, doing so without first consulting the President. Lincoln then responded to the order with two documents as seen in the photos, each signed in type: Abraham Lincoln. This coverage extends over to page 5 (see photos). There is also editorial comment on this controversy, headed: "The President's Proclamation--Its Effects Upon the Country".
Eight pages, archival mend on the 2nd leaf (pages 3 & 4) but does not affect mentioned content, otherwise very nice condition.
