January 23, 1863

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, January 23, 1863  This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The front page includes some items relating to the Civil War including articles headed: "Serenade of Hon. Mr. Vallandingham" "Bold Talk in the Northwest" "Lincoln Again in Doubt" "Effects of The Proclamation", the latter being a brief item concerning the Emancipation Proclamation (see).
The inside pages have much on the Civil War including items headed: "The News" which has a variety of tidbits; "The Legislature" "A Deserter Shot" "The President's Message" which is most of a column concerning a recent address of President Jefferson Davis; "General Order #1" concerning the enrolling of officers, etc. (see for portions); "General Burnside's Defeat" "Report of the Secretary of the Treasury" "Northern Items" and a bit more. Pg. 3 has an ad: "Deserters. $120 Reward" with details (see).
The back page is mostly taken up with ads, including "A Proclamation" by the governor of North Carolina, "Deserters" and "$270 Reward...for the arrest & delivery of the following nine deserters..." and more.
Complete in four pages, a very light water stain in the upper right, otherwise in nice condition.
