This newspaper features one of the larger & more decorative masthead engravings to be found in a colonial America newspaper.
A terrific issue on the trouble with the Regulators of North Carolina, as page 2 contains a petition to the governor concerning the War of Regulation, followed by the governor's response in which he calls for the Regulators to put down their arms and surrender, etc. One paragraph begins: "Benjamin Merrill, you have been indicted & found guilty by your country of high treason...", he being among the leaders of the Regulators. He was executed on June 19, 1771.
The Regulators were a large group of North Carolina colonists who opposed the taxation and fee system imposed by colonial officials in the late 1760s. This political argument led to a battle between the colonial militia and the Regulators in 1771.
Page 3 also contains a nice report concerning the trouble with the Regulators, including: "...Governor came up, gave orders, and the dreadful slaughter began while the Regulators were still in council numbers were killed by the first discharge of the cannon...".
Four pages, a bit irregular at the blank spine, good condition.
