THE TOMBSTONE EPITAPH, Cochise County, Arizona, April 3, 1882

* Mention of the Earps and Pete Spence
* Extremely rare Old West title

Few could argue for a more recognizable title from the Old West, nor could any town be more linked to the romance of the West than this one. Tombstone is steeped in Western lore, and the several movies done concerning the gunfight at the O.K. Corral have kept this town in popular culture.
This issue has mention of the Earps, with a page 3 report noting: "...It is well authenticated that the Earps and their immediate following passed Albuquerque on the 28th instant, bound east. They have, in all probability, left Arizona for good & will not be seen in that territory again. This is the wisest course they could pursue. Their lives were not safe for a moment in Tombstone, even if they had given themselves up to the authorities...The Earps are brave men & did good work in Arizona in the preservation of law, and it is a pity that they were not backed by the community in their efforts to suppress the lawless element that through murder and robbery are retarding the development of the territory."
Also a report headed: "Mr. Hooker and the Sheriff's Posse" which relates to Wyatt's Vendetta Ride. Also: "Spence Discharged" beginning: "The case of the Territory vs. Pete Spence, charged with the murder of Morgan Earp, was completed...".
Complete in 4 pages, various archival mends & reinforcement at the spine & the margins inside, a few minor edge tears, otherwise good. A very rare & desirable newspaper as any extant issues of this paper all came from just one institution in California.
