June 26, 1861

THE SOUTH, Baltimore, Maryland, June 26, 1861

* Rare pro-Confederate title

Maryland was a border state during the Civil War, meaning within the state there were sympathies for both the Union and Confederacy. By the title of this newspaper it is obvious which side its editorial policy favored. Articles include: "The Civil War In America" "Virginia Delegates to the Confederate Congress" with the full list; "The Marylanders In Virginia" "Traitors to be Shot" "Complaints of the Volunteers" "From California--By Pony Express" and more.
Four pages, folio size, never bound nor trimmed, nice condition. This is the volume 1 no. 57 issue indicating that this newspaper began when the Civil War formally broke out.
