THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, June, 1755 The first 2 1/2 pages are taken up with: "A Particular Account of a late Dispute between the Assembly of Pennsylvania & Governor Morris concerning their Raising Money in the Present Exigence of Affairs for the Defence of the Colony".Also on this issue are: "Speeches of the Indian Chiefs" "Rejoinder of the Six Nations"; a continued article titled: "Account of the British Territories in N. America" which takes over 3 pages; a continued: "Account of Norway"; "Of Manufacturing Indigo Into a Dye" in the Carolinas; a continued: "Account of the British Territories in N. America" and much more.
Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has the latest news reports of the day including some reports headed "America" which has some items on the French & Indian War: "...In New York they are wholly employed in repairing fortifications & raising men...By the measures concerted in the general council...in presence of Gen. Braddock, 9 or 10,000 men are to be employed, 2500 of which under the general, are on their march towards Monongahela River, at the confluence of which with the Ohio stands fort Du Quesne. Jersey will raise 500 men..." with more (see).
Included is one of the two plates called for, a foldout.
Complete in 48 pages, 5 by 8 inches, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate, very nice condition.
A very nice magazine from before the French & Indian War with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
