December 12, 1863

BOSTON DAILY ADVERTISER, Dec. 12, 1863

* Events of the year in review (1863)
* Battle of Gettysburg revisited

Close to half of the ftpg. is taken up with the: "Department Reports - Report of the Secretary of War" in which he reflects upon the events of the Civil War for the year 1863, signed in type: Edwin M. Stanton. Also a brief report which contains Lincoln's thanks to Gen. Grant's for his work at Chattanooga & Knoxville, signed in type: A. Lincoln.
Page 2 has: "Edward Everett at Gettysburg" in which the writer reviews his lengthy speech at the dedication ceremony on Nov. 19. One bit notes: "...the discourse at Gettysburg was remarkable for the perfection of its literary finish. In this respect no loving orator can pretend to compare with Mr. Everett..." yet it is curious that in history, it was Lincoln's quite brief speech which has been remembered, while Everett's very lengthy address has long been forgotten.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, large folios size, nice condition. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.
