May 16, 1926

THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 16, 1926

* Roald Amundsen & Airship Norge
* 1st official North Pole flight ?

The front page has a nice banner headline: "NORGE SAFE IN ALASKA AFTER 71-HOUR FLIGHT; FORCED DOWN BY FOG AND ICE FORMING ON SHIP; CROSSED NORTH POLE, FOUND NO NEW LAND" with many subheads and related photo and map. Much more on the following pages with loads of text. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news of the day. Complete 1st section only with all 32 pages, light even toning, irregular along the spine, generally nice.

wikipedia notes: The Norge was a semi-rigid Italian-built airship that carried out what many consider the first verified overflight of the North Pole on May 12, 1926. It was also the first aircraft to fly over the polar ice cap between Europe and America. The expedition was the brainchild of polar explorer and expedition leader Roald Amundsen, the airship's designer and pilot Umberto Nobile and American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth, who along with the Aero Club of Norway financed the trip.
