THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, September, 1771 The opposite side of the title/contents page is entirely taken up with: "American Affairs", most dealing with a Resolution of a n assembly of the clergy at Williamsburg. Also datelined Williamsburg is an item concerning the damage to tobacco due to flooding, as well as a report from Boston and one from New York, the latter concerning trouble with the Regulators in North Carolina (see).Other articles within include: "Modern Matrimonial Grievances" "Critical Remarks on M. de Voltaire" "Account of the late Famine in India" and much more. Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" with much news of the day.
Included is the only plate called for, being a very nice foldout of: "A Plan of the Canal from the Trent to the Severn" showing from Stafford to Bewdley in England (see) & measuring 7 1/4 by 12 inches.
Complete in 48 pages, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate, 5 by 8 inches, very nice condition.
A very nice magazine from the "mother country" not long before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
