THE LONDON MAGAZINE, England, June, 1778 Near the back are 1 1/2 pages headed: "American Affairs". Included is a letter signed by: W. Howe announcing his replacement, Sir Henry Clinton, has arrived, and Howe will soon be leaving for England. He also comments on recent military events under his leadership (see).
Also included is a nice account of the battle at Bordentown, New Jersey. As General Clinton was preparing to evacuate Philadelphia & return to New York via New Jersey, they were met by militia of the Americans, but succeeded in overpowering the and scuttling several Pennsylvania boats. (see report for details).
There is also a very kind letter to General Burgoyne, shortly after his surrender at Saratoga, signed in type by: Geo. Washington. Washington sympathizes with Burgoyne's plight, noting: "...in the light of an officer contending against what I conceive to be the rights of my country, the reverse of fortune you experienced in the field cannot be unacceptable to me; but, abstracted from considerations of national advantages, I can sincerely sympathize with your feelings as a soldier, the unavoidable difficulties of whose situation forbid his success; and...the anxieties of captivity & the painful sensibility for a reputation..." (see).
Complete in 48 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, great condition. One of the two plates called for is present.
Formatted very much like the Gentleman's Magazine but a much more scarce title. The title/contents page features a great engraving of the skyline of London.
