THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, March, 1768 Among the items in this issue are: "Ancient Temple at Winterborn Abbey" which includes an illustration; "On the Different Positions of the Great Occipital Aperture in man and Diverse Animals"; and much more. Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has the latest news reports of the day & which includes items under "American News". Bits include: "At Alexandria in Virginia a number of negroes lately conspired to poison their overseers & several have lost their lives in consequence..." and the governor of New York is offering a reward to find the author of a "...seditious paper..." which includes: "Whereas a glorious stand for liberty did appear in the resentment shewn to a set of miscreants under the name of Stamp Masters in the year 1765; and it is now feared that a set of gentry called Commissioners...whose odious business is of a similar nature..." with more.The foldout plate called for is not present.
Complete in 48 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate, lite dampstaining in the lower left corner, otherwise in good condition.
A very nice magazine from the "mother country" from before the Revolutionary War with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
