July 04, 1818

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, July 4, 1818

* Western emigration
* Emancipation of slaves

A great issue on the beginnings of some notable cities in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois with an article headed: "The Public Lands" beginning: "...I proceed in this letter to give a brief account of the several land offices now in operation for the sale of the public lands in the states of Ohio and Indiana, and the adjoining territories...". The lengthy article is very descriptive of Stuebenville, Marietta, Zanesville, Wooster, Chillicothe, Cincinnati, Jeffersonville, Vincennes, Shawneetown, Kaskaskia, Edwardsville, and Detroit.
Also inside is half a page on: "Emancipation of the Blacks" which concerns: "...the object of the society: Namely, the gradual abolition of the slavery of the people of color in our nation...the situation of this unhappy race of beings, which are held in the most degraded state of servitude..." and much more. Also: "Tribute to the Brave" reports on the funeral of Brig. General Zebulon Pike.
Sixteen pages, 6 by 9 1/2 inches, very nice condition.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
